The pansy is one of the strongest and most
durable flowers we know of and will thrive in most climates for one or more
seasons. It’s early bloom will bring spring fever to most of us during the
cold winter months. No matter how much snow or ice, you can rest assured
when it melts the smiling face of the delightful flower will chase away your
cold, moody feelings
The pansy is a glutton for
food and guzzler of water. In order to satisfy her appetite you must feed
her constantly. There are many fertilizers, which she will respond to and we
have tried them all. However, we were not satisfied and were driven to
develop one especially suited to her taste. We have known for many years
that she loves organic nitrogen in the form of blood, composted manure and
leaf mold. Our old southern recipe uses these two items as our basic
building material. Our formula is our secret, however, we can tell you it’s
a combination of our Compostost®, which contains two manures, blood meal;
granite meal plus cricket manure and lime.
The recipe above will make
your pansies teacup size with the short, stocky growth and they will bloom
throughout the season without having to remove the seed pod (deadheading).
Our growing advice is
simple. Enrich your soil with Compostost® or your own compost to a depth of
six inches, water the bed thoroughly and allow a day or so for the soil to
rest. Add 4 pounds of PansyMate® to a 50 square feet and work into the top
of the soil. Again water in thoroughly, wait several hours or over night
and plant the pansies at the level they were grown, insuring no soil covers
the stem of the plant. Water in well and mulch with your favorite mulch.
We love the elite of all mulches, which is cypress chip. This is a step
many gardeners overlook and is very important anywhere, but even more so in
the northern climates where snow is frequent. The pansy is a tough “ombrey”
but will do so much better if given a blanket to prevent extreme changes in
the soil temperature.
Follow our advice, use
plenty of compost, water and feed once per month with PansyMate® (one
tablespoon per plant) and you too can have our favorite flower almost all
year long up north, and during fall, winter and spring in the West and
Southwest.
If you are not completely
surprised and satisfied with our PansyMate®, your money will be refunded
without question. You owe it to yourself and your beautiful pansies to try
our old southern recipe – PansyMate®.
